CITIZENSHIP AND PARTICIPATION

1981

The field Citizenship and Participation places emphasis on the new ways in which the citizens are shaping the organization of society and state. The main objective of this field of research is to offer a perspective on social challenges and problems – from the citizens’ perspective.

In the social development theory, the idea that civic engagement and participation can directly contribute to better governance and to overall societal development has been developed over the past two decades. The results of this research area have significant implications on the creation of programs aimed at improving the responsibility and efficiency of state institutions towards the citizens.

This area focuses on studying the effects of civic participation in connection to the following topics:

(a) the manner in which civic awareness is built;
(b) the emergence and strengthening of participative practices; and
(c) strengthening responsible and accountable institutions.
